PENTAX 17, tek bir 35 mm formatlı (36 mm x 24 mm) film karesi içinde iki adet 17 mm x 24 mm resim çekebilen bir yarım kare fotoğraf makinesidir. Fotoğraf makinesinin bölge odaklama sistemi, uzak mesafedeki veya makro bölgesinde 25 santimetreye kadar yakın mesafedeki nesneleri çekmek için bölge odaklama halkası üzerinde seçilebilen altı odaklama bölgesine ayrılmıştır. Parlak optik vizörü, bir sahneyi çerçevelemeyi kolaylaştırmak için parlak, Albada tipi bir çerçeve bulucunun yanı sıra kullanıcıların yakın çekim görüntüleri daha kolay oluşturmasına yardımcı olmak için yakın çekim görsel alan telafi çerçevesine sahiptir.
